About the project:

From Words to Stories is a national initiative by a coalition of LGBTI+, Roma, and migrant organizations, together with the Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria. It addresses hate speech as a widespread issue affecting multiple communities, including LGBTI+ people, Roma, migrants, refugees, and Jews.

The project aims to foster understanding, enable expression, and engage the public in combating intolerance. By emphasizing collaboration and storytelling, the project builds bridges between affected communities and media professionals in order to create impactful narratives that lead to changes in attitudes.

At the same time, the project empowers community leaders to act as ambassadors through their personal stories, builds capacity, develops skills, promotes the reporting of hate speech and hate crimes, and actively seeks cooperation with the institutions responsible for these issues.

Project objectives and activities:

  • – Counteracting hate speech in its various dimensions, as well as other forms of intolerance and discrimination
  • – Developing the capacity of story holders (youth from minority groups and their allies) and storytellers (journalists, media professionals, and content creators), as well as building bridges between them
  • – Reaching the wider public through various channels and tools – media publications; youth-led online content; films; socially engaged art; online and offline campaigns
  • – Increasing the level of reporting of hate speech and hate crimes, as well as engaging and cooperating with the responsible institutions
